In recognition of Mental Health Month (May), and coming out of the work of the Autura Eason-Williams Day of Lament and Action 2023 (AEWDLA), TWK/BMCR is sponsoring a 3-hour workshop on Trauma,to be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 9:30 to 12:30. The Zoom workshop will be led by Dr. Vanessa Parker, (PhD, MSSW, LMSW), who is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Indiana University at Bloomington. Her work has focused on the effects of trauma on the health of minoritized identities, like Black people, with particular interest on cardiovascular disease among young adults. Dr. Parker is the daughter of Rev. Velma Thomas-Parker, a Deacon at Gordon Memorial UMC and chaplain in the TN prison system.
The interactive workshop for all ages will include hands-on exercises, a breakdown on what trauma is and how it affects us individually and communally, large and small group discussion, and opportunities to ask questions.
